CAN Virtual Circuit and Converter Module The CAN Virtual Circuit and Converter Module (VCCM) provides a hardware interface between a CAN 2.0A/B network and a RS232 serial communication port. The VCCM receives messages on the CAN bus and converts them for output on the RS232 port. In a similar fashion, data arriving from the RS232 port are reformatted and transmitted on the CAN bus, providing for a bi-directional mode of communication. There are two modes of operation that can be selected and depending on the mode selected, the message processing performed is different. In the Virtual Circuit (VC) mode, the VCCM provides a virtual serial link across the physical CAN network. Data arriving at the RS232 ports on the VCCM are converted to CAN packets on the CAN bus. Specific CAN messages on the CAN bus are converted to a byte stream and output via the on-board RS232 ports. Two virtual circuits can be handled at the same time. In the Converter Mode (CM), the VCCM converts valid ASCII message received on the RS232 port to CAN packets and sends them out to the CAN network. CAN packets arriving over the CAN network are received and converted to ASCII format and sent out the RS232 ports. This provides full access to the CAN network over the RS232 serial interface.
